The distinction is based on the compatibility of the system. A karaoke machine can either play mp3 files, or it plays CDG discs. And, in some rare cases, a karaoke player will be compatible with either option. Both mp3 and CDG are relatively affordable. If you decide that discs are the way to go, then you can buy CDG discs for a low price, and burn your own tunes onto them. Or you can buy discs that already contain your favorite music, for a slightly more expensive price. If you would prefer to use mp3 files, then you really only need to transfer your own mp3 files onto your player, and voila.

This is clearly the old fashioned option, and with it comes a classical ambiance that is appreciated by older generations. Another reason to choose CDG is that you actually have a physical collection of your favorite tunes. With mp3, all your files are digital, and you cannot actually physically see them. If you like collecting things, then there's a very good chance that you'll love collecting karaoke CDG discs.

The mp3 player provides a more modern feel. But, the main reason to adopt this option is the convenience. Of course, you will need to have an mp3 player in the first place to be able to play mp3 files. Most people already own an mp3 player, which is fantastic. Not only can you play your tunes, if your friend brings over an iPod, you can play there tunes, and your song collection can reach an all time high. Another big advantages is that you do not need to eject a disc, and reinsert another one. You also cannot adjust playlists like you can with an mp3 player. Everything you need is at the push of a button.
What platform is better for you?
If you already own an mp3 player, then it is the superior option in terms of functionality. That being said, if you have a collecting fetish, or like to keep it old school, then you may prefer the CDG disc karaoke players.
